First ever Phone interview!!

Standard

On Wednesday; last week, I had my first ever phone interview for a job in Poland as an ESL Intern with Speed School of English and I was terribly nervous about it. I have never had an interview over the phone before. I know that this will be how the schools or companies I apply for will conduct their interviews. However; we had some technical difficulties – using public WiFi is not a good idea (that is a thing to remember) but we ended up using my mobile number. It worked fine but it was a little noisy and I sat in my car. I am so glad that I was unable to be seen. I was interviewed by Andy.

The interview lasted for half an hour and I was surprised by the amount of questions he asked. I had the feeling that I did not do every well when it had finished. There were questions that I did not even think that he would ask about…for example – grammar! I was asked to give examples of Tenses – Past, Present and Future. I was asked to give an example – I could not believe it my mind went blank! It was horrid. This is where I think it all went down hill for me. However; Andy did ask my for the definitions of two words. The words were ‘Century’ and ‘Freedom’. Personally; I think that my answers were pretty lame,  but Andy seemed to like them. At the end of the half an hour, Andy said that he would pass my details etc. onto Natalie and she would call me again after the weekend to ask some more questions on Grammar. He would email me a “Pre-Arrival Study Pack” to read beforehand; which when it arrived I read front to back three times and highlighted the key points of Grammar.

It has been many months since I did my Grammar Awareness Course (and I feel that it is time that I refresh myself by doing the course again!) and I am very worried about the questions the Natalie would ask. Within the email; which to be honest I thought Andy was going to send by it was actually from Natalie, stated that I have a good personality for being a TEFL teacher and I would fit in with the rest of the team (paraphrasing a little). My jaw almost hit the floor when I read that part; I could not believe it. I must have been okay with the interview. I was a little relived. However; today was the second half of the interview. Again I feel that it did not go to plan. I was very nervous. I knew that she would ask me to give examples of all the tenses and what the parts of speech were. I focussed on these sections when I was waiting for Natalie to call me.

However; Natalie did say that she would contact my References by phone (I have had to change my Reference recently as one of them is no longer able to be contacted by the information I have for them) or by email (as one of my current References is Deaf) to discuss me and my ability to teach. At this time I became more nervous; as the Grammar questions she had asked I did not fully answer correctly. However; as an Intern you are being taught how to teach in theory so I would have to brush up pretty quickly! [Note to Self: write a post about Grammar].

She did ask me one thing…would I be able to start working with Speed School before the Summer 2015. “All I need to do is to give my current employers one months notice” was all I said; but I know that I would have to discuss the matter with my family.

So, what do you all think? Has she just said ‘maybe’ to me?

Feeling a little down…

Standard

Including today; I have 12 working days left of 2014…I should be excited, however; I am not. The last few days I have not been feeling my “100% positive” self; which is horrid. Not just for me; but for the people (both students and staff) I work with. I had sold one of my Trading Cards sets on eBay two weeks ago and it fell through as the payment was blocked at the buyers end. The payment would have been half of my first payment for the Vietnam Internship. I am desperate move on; I am not happy here. I need to start  my new life away from everything here. I have decided that I will not be spending much after the Holiday period. I know that I need to save as much as possible. I have worked out how to get to Vietnam when (or if) the time arrives. I just need to save some more Avios points; it is a shame that I cannot convert these Nectar points I have got. I may spend them on resources or things that I may need while I am away.

I also have not been well the last few days; chronic headaches and feeling nauseous. I think that is due to not fully enjoying my job. I have been thinking about my family more and what will happen while I would be away. My sister in law has a relative who has taught in China as a TEFL teacher and she said that he loved it. She was glad that the internet was available and she could contact them. This would be the same for me…I know that I can always send an email or chat on Skype. I really need to stop thinking about my family and what they would think and just think of myself.

I have no ties here; other than my family. I can always return to my current job (that is if I wish to return to it), my volunteering I can also return to – I have not really enjoyed it since my Mum retired from it in April – I can take my memories with me. That is all I need…

2014v2-buy-table-printed-headerI really need to sort myself out. I have ordered a workbook from Leonie Dawson. I have ordered the Life and Biz workbook. I need to sort it all out. Leonie is wonderful woman; she lives in Australia and runs her own business. She is one crazy arsed woman, but she makes me smile and helps me to think of myself more. I found her via Jen Saunders at Wild Sister; who is amazing too! I know that buying this workbook I have spent money and not saving it; however it will set me and my goals alive ready for 2015. I feel that this is what I need currently in my life.

I have been worried about the Vietnam Internship and if I will be able to afford to go. I need to save and sell a lot of my crafty items, eBay stock and have as many things on Vinted as I can.

Doing the Vietnam Internship?!

Comments 2 Standard

Well, I am all excited (again!) about an Internship programme organised by i-to-i TEFL; but this time it it all about the Vietnam Internship it is cheaper than the China Internship; which makes life a little easier for me; as I will not need to save as much money. The lovely Rebecca; one of the Advisers at i-to-i, has been very helpful. I had so many questions about the Internship; from flights, accommodation, food and the actual cost. she answered all the questions bar one – the flights! I was wondering which airport to fly into; however, I would not know until I had been accepted onto the Internship. *Thumbs up*

AviosI have been very cheeky and I have already been watching some of the flights to Vietnam from the UK. I have been saving my AirMiles (they are now called Avios points) for a while and I am at 17,420 points. I just hope that I can use them to get to Vietnam. I want to save as much cash as I can!

Things to do

I have created a HUGE “Things To Do” List; which is a massive list of things I need to do to make this trip a reality. However; there is only one person I need to persuade (or tell) and that is my mother. I think that she is worried that I will not be able to cope; afford or even enjoy being away from her (and the rest of my family). I have also contacted the boss of my current job and inquired about having a Sabbatical for the time I would be in Vietnam; however, the place where I am working is about to go through a major re-structuring process and no one knows what it is going to be like in August 2015. I will have to wait until December this year to find out more. I will keep you all posted about that. I know that teaching English is the next step for me and I have to stop thinking about it and just do it!

improve business english

I have finally started the Teaching Business English module and surprisingly I am enjoying it. However; i-to-i have a new teaching platform and my new modules (Business English and Korea) are on this new platform whereas my ‘older’ modules are on the old platform. It gets very confusing sometimes.I am in two minds about doing the Advanced Grammar course as it is the next level after my Grammar Awareness Course (which I need to remind myself to re-read before I even start any teaching). I know that whatever modules I complete with i-to-i with increase my chances of achieving a teaching post; I just need the experience. I know that completing the Internship, I will gain the experience and confidence to teaching anywhere.

I am still a little down after the MEDDEAS application; but there is a silver lining (ooh…an idiom to add to the list) which comes in the form of the Vietnam Internship. I just need to get my arse in gear. The lovely Rebecca sent me an email with some links and I thought that I would share them with you.

Camilla went on the Vietnam Internship in 2012. Her posts on the Chalkboard are very interesting. She is also a Featured Writer on the i-to-i Blog

The Very First Vietnam Internship was a blog post; where Camilla was interviewed about her time in Vietnam.

TTV Vietnam Internship – What’s It Like?!; another blog post about the Internship. There is also a video on the post; but I thought that I would post it straight here:

Annabelle’s blog – Do They Have Earl Grey Tea in Vietnam?

Because I am SUPER EXCITED (sorry for the caps) I now need to work through my “Things To Do” list and get the pennies in! I am now wondering if any of you lovely people who are followers of my blog; could help me with this Vietnam dream of mine? Please can you all head over to any (or all) of these online shops and see if there is anything that takes your fancy. There are going to be many things being uploaded in the next few weeks.

A little piece of news…

Comment 1 Standard

I have heard back from MEDDEAS…that have sent me a Preference Form to complete and return it them. I am very excited about the idea of moving away and living in Spain. I choose to start September 2015; this will give me time to actually print off and download LOADS of resources ready to use with the students. This will also give me enough time to sort my finances and save money for life abroad. I know that I am being a little presumption; but I have decided to stay positive and have the dream of achieving all I can achieve.

I have downloaded from Mind Snacks the Spanish version of their Language App; I just hope that the SmartPhone with behave and allow me to actually ‘play’ the games and learn Spanish.

One of my helpers at my Guide unit is studying Spanish and I think it is great how she can swap from English to Spanish with ease. This reminds me of myself with my Sign Language; as I am always switching between the two. I wonder if I will continue to do that when I am teaching abroad. I will keep you all posted with that…

I cannot believe that we have broken up for the October Half Term today for a whole week; I am looking forward to the time off. This is due to having to plan for my NaNoWriMo novel which I will be completing during the thirty days of November. I am aiming to complete it; well at least the fourth chapter anyway.

I am going to splash out and buy myself a 32GB memory stick (and in the future buy an external hard drive) to store all my Resources upon. I know how much a teacher collects over the year with resources, mark books, displays etc.; I can always create my own if I cannot find what I am looking for, can’t I?

I have ‘bought’ (well it is in my cart ready to buy on pay day) the next two Specialist Modules I have not completed at i-to-i TEFL. Advanced Grammar TEFL Certificate is the last Specialist Module I have left to do…I think I will use that as a reward for completing NaNoWriMo…good idea right?!

Apologies; Apologies; Apologies…

Standard

My deepest apologies to you all; for not posting anything for the last few weeks , well six weeks! I have had a change in my current job which means I no longer have access to the internet on a daily basis (sad face) however; I have splashed out and bought myself a Tablet thingy which I can post on everyday! Yippie! I can use the Wireless at the place I am now working at on the first half of the week.

I will be catching up on Wordle Wednesday and Idiom of the Week as of Monday; so keep your eyes peeled!

I sent my CV off to IC Bilbao and I have heard back from them – see Writing a Wicked covering Letter – sadly I should have sent my CV to the earlier in the year as all the positions the school has is Part Time ones; I have contacted them to ask about the amount of hours, pay etc. I’ll keep you posted about that.

I have been busy with this new job which has taken me away from this blog; to be honest it kills me not blogging about my adventures. I am always on the lookout for jobs and I have been thinking about setting up my own Online School using Moodle but it could be expensive as I would have to buy a domain and applying to be an online school where people can get accredited qualifications. I will need to do a lot of research before deciding on the idea.

Writing a Wicked Covering Letter…

Comments 2 Standard

Hey everyone; I have found a few jobs that I want to apply for on the Jobs Board. However; they are all requiring a covering letter – I have done covering letters for my current job but I have never really written one for a TEFL position. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for me?

I have a lot of experience of working with people and I know that this is one of the many qualities that the schools that are in need of TEFL teachers want.

Do you think that I should have a generic covering letter and change the name of the “school/company” each time I send it or should I make each letter personal to the School/company?

I want to make it personal for each school/company but when that be truly productive when it comes to applying for TEFL jobs? I have also registered on other TEFL Job Boards that are scattered all over the internet.

IC Bilbao has been one of the places I have been very interested in going to in Spain. I ‘follow’ them on most of the Social Media platforms and I feel that I would fit with all the other members of staff. They have not requested a covering letter; just my CV – which before writing this post I sent my CV to them via their website.

On a bit of a hitatus?!

Standard

Hey everyone; sorry for the lack of the “themed” posts this week – I have been doing a lot of soul searching and researching about moving abroad. I have been leaving hints around my house to see what my family will say or do…I will post Idiom of the Week and Wordle Wednesday next week!

As of yet; nothing has been said! I have borrowed a book from the local library by Lonely Planet.

As I have been thinking about the China Internship; it may only be about £700 (plus flights and visas) to go over to China and there is a deposit scheme to reserve a place. I just I do knowing paying that much money is a good thing to do.

I can work in Spain; a country I like very much. It is not too far to get back if anything happens. I REALLY need to send my CV off and add it to the i-to-i TEFL job board!

What do you all think?
